The Dumping Ground

When you walk into our house, you pass through a small entry way/laundry area into our kitchen and dining room.  Immediately to the left is the dumping ground:

This is the countertop that is part of the "island" of our kitchen, though it's more like a peninsula since it's attached.  This is the space where things get put as you come into the house that you need to put down immediately- bags, mail, groceries, anything you don't know what else to do with it.  It is located halfway between the front door and the sliding back door so it gets stuff from both directions, and it is not limited to the counter.  The floor directly under the counter and the stool also take part.  It drives me crazy.

I want one of those beautiful mud rooms that they show in Better Homes and Gardens magazine that are larger than my living room and have cubbies, closets, and hooks for everything.  All decked out in perfect cottage style, of course.  But until I become a multi-millionaire I guess I'm going to have to try and find another solution.

Do you have a dumping ground in your house?

  1. Sadly, my WHOLE HOUSE looks kind of like your dumping ground right now :-) I want a gorgeous mud room, too--I always think it's so funny in the BHG pictures of mud rooms that the galoshes are always lined up just right, the coats on the hooks always match the shoes . . . I doubt MY mud room would look like that ;-)

  2. Oh, my whole house looks like that, too, but to post all that would just be too embarrassing! :) The rest of the house doesn't bother me as much. Maybe because that spot is right in the kitchen and therefore IN THE WAY that it bugs me so much!

  3. OMG! I live in a small 2 bedroom apartment which is also where I work out of...Our living room is my "studio". We haven't been able to locate the furniture...I sit crisscross-applesauce in the center of my chaos to create! UGH! I am doing a trade w/ a professional organizer to get my place multi-functional and in order...Ikea & Container store...here we come. Praying to make some money to get a studio....

  5. lol Any chair in our apartment is our dummping ground. Just like Pearle,my boyfriend and I are in a small 2 bedroom apartment. How 2 people have so much "dumpage" is beyond me, but we do! :(

  6. My kitchen counter is just like yours only worse! Pretty much every flat surface in the house is a dumping ground but the kitchen is the worst.

  7. I'm slightly ashamed to say that there is no place that is off limits as a dumping ground in my place. Every table, inch of counter space, most of the floor...Yesterday I got a note from my apartment complex reminding me of upcoming window washing and I just threw it on the floor by the door (it's still there, lol). What is wrong with me?!! I swear I don't live like a hoarder! I try and pick up at least once a week, but sometimes I just don't give a crap. :(
Also, my cat is evil and has lots of toys and likes to knock stuff on the ground...yeah, it's all him.

  8. I have always told my husband that "all I want in our first home is a mudroom. and a fancy bathroom." But ya, I also dream. Mostly through martha stewart. Here is a great link to organizing random things like that, hopefully you can use one without a mudroom! http://www.marthastewart.com/photogallery/mudroom-ideas

  9. Sadly, my kitchen counter looks ever so much worse than yours! Since we have 7 people in an 1150 square foot house, messes like that are par for the course!

My entire soaping business is contained in an 800 lb Maple armoire my dad made me when I was a teenager, which is 13 times too grand for our tiny living room! All the drawers are filled with soap, the shelf is my "desk" and holds my printer, and even the top is used for curing soap. Sigh. It gets frustrating at times, but a very well-known soap supply shop started just this way; in a living room; and ended up in a 20,000 square foot building, so I try not to despair!

  12. Our "dumping grounds" are pretty much all surfaces!! Mostly our dresser and my desk. We're pretty good at cleaning them off often, but the next day stuff starts piling right back up - aaaagh! I wish it could be picture perfect 24/7 ;) I definitely need MORE storage.
